Discover How to Be Your Best
Featuring You - Meet Andy Webster
by Elizabeth Hamilton-Guarino on October 22nd, 2013

Tell us about yourself.
My name is Andy Webster. I am a professional guitarist, currently living in the Austin, TX area. I was born in Iowa, and raised there as well as in Chicago IL and London, England.

How did you get to be where you are today?
LOL! I have no idea….I keep looking forward!

How do you help others be their best?
I spend a large amount of my professional time teaching musical expression via the guitar. I try and instill a sense of worth to my students, and teach them that they have value through their musical explorations.

How do you help yourself be the best you can be?
There are a few mantras that I affirm daily: “Be Here Now”, “Fear is an illusion”, “You are Enough”, and “One of the few things in life worth taking seriously is humor!”

Tell us about some special in your life?
Something, or someone? LOL, there are many of both! The thing thats so very special in my life is the time I get to spend with my instrument. As far as the someone’s are concerned, there are my boys. I can’t tell you how meaningful even the slightest moments are when I’m with them.

What’s new in your life?
I’m beginning a new chapter in my life as a divorced father, as well as shifting from being primarily an educator towards being a regularly-performing musician.

Have you ever been fired?
Yes! I was fired from the Bettendorf Red Lobster a very long time ago! I went with a (mutual friend of ours) friend to have dinner there for my seventeenth birthday. We were served a pitcher of real strawberry daiquiris instead of virgin! I got fired, so did the server. Oh man….I still feel bad about that today. It was a complete mistake, no one was trying to get one over or break any laws…..

What are your real passions?
There are so MANY! I really believe that one should live life 100%! So first there are my boys, music, motorcycling, Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, keeping fit, teaching, herpetology and herpetoculture. Ok, so not that many…..Oh! Chocolate. I’m passionate about chocolate!

If you won the lotto what would you do?
Three things: place ⅓ of the total sum in trust for my kids. Pay off my current/future debts, and invest in my friends musical/career endeavours!

What do you hope to accomplish in the future?
Just to live happily, raise my boys to be strong and self-reliant, and to leave a legacy of music, laughter and adventure!

What do you like to do in your personal life?
I love spending time with my kids, my friends and fellow musicians. I can’t run anymore, so I’ve begun the swimming phase of my life, lol….and I really enjoy it! Living in Texas I have now learned how to properly bbq. It’s quite different from the grilling that I grew up with...and it’s quite a challenge, but I really enjoy it. Oh yes, there’s the consumption of chocolate. Mmmmmmm, chocolate!
Please give us one or two shameless plugs.
I must plug my new CD, “Therapy Sessions” as well as the works of my fellow National Guitar Workshop brethren as well as my fellow USC Trojan Guitarists! There’s so very much music out there that the public goes completely unaware of…..if I can shed some light and attention...as well as help boost their sales (and my own), well I’m happy to do so! So please check out Jody Fisher, Steve Khan, Tom Dempsy, Jeff McErlaine, Angus Clark, Erik Halbig, Adam Levy, Amanda Monaco, Pat Berguson, Dave hamburger, Matt Smith, Jen Leigh, James Hogan, Dave Martone, Terry Syrek, Wayne Riker, Frank Potenza, Andy Abad, Richard Smith, Pat Kelly, Blake Aaron…..Laura Mace, Ben Lacy, Cathy Alonzo, Suzan Mazur, Alec Bridges, Scott Doyle, Michael Jeffrey Stevens, and Carson Alexander. Just to name a few. These are really wonderful, passionate people. Many of whom have helped me to get where I am musically today.

Please give us one plug for someone else or your favorite cause or charity.
I think I just did! lol!

What is your favorite book to recommend to someone else to read.
Oh easy….”It all Begins with Food” by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig. Really important book about the foods we eat and the way it affects our entire body.

What are some of your favorites? (books, websites, etc..)
The two J.R.R.s: Tolkien and Martin, the Miles Davis biography by Quincy Troupe and Billy Collins’ poetry. Terry Syrek’s album, “Machine Elves” and Pat Berguson’s “Hippy Dance”. I’m always on Football365.com. Uhh, that’s REAL football...not the NFL “Throwball” stuff...lol. Truefire.com has some great guitar lesson materials, probably the best on the internet…..and the Starz series, “Spartacus”, along with “Game of Thrones”, is a favorite in my DVD collection.

Share a secret ;)
I’ll share a couple: 1. I don’t hate Nickelback, I quite like some of their stuff! 2. Same goes for Katy Perry. I got to see her before the whole “I kissed a girl” thing broke her….and I thought she was good then….and 3. I’m hungry.
